If you would like to enjoy an evening at the theater from home, several of Houston’s performing arts theaters offer plenty of virtual fun. You can watch plays, learn about costume design, and so much more. The theaters near our apartments in Houston include:
Nationally recognized, the Alley Theatre produces everything from new works to re-invigorated classics. Alley has enriched the lives of Houstonians for the last 70 years and is one of the country's largest nonprofit theaters. Its first home was a single room at the end of an alley, where there was no heat in the winter or fans in the summer. The theatre moved into its current home in 1968, and now reaches over 200,000 people every year. Alley@Home features recorded performances, costume recreations, and Ask an Actor Instagram Takeover videos.
The Ensemble Theatre opened in 1976 as a way to "preserve African American artistic expression." Today, Ensemble is the southwest's oldest and largest professional African American theater. Founder George Hawkins wanted a place where artists could receive technical training and enjoy expanded employment opportunities. Today, his legacy lives on. The productions are produced in-house, and they reach approximately 65,000 people every year. The "E" Entertainment Experience features stage readings, special products, and other online fun.
At the Miller Outdoor Theatre, the exciting performances are always free. It offers the largest "always free" program of its type in the United States. The theater's season is the most diverse in Houston, with a typical year including classic films, world music, and Shakespeare. The Miller Dream Streams offers live-stream performances, and shows are available on YouTube for 48 hours.
